They aren't all bad, the Death Egg Robot was honestly brilliant, and some of the one-on-ones like Heavy Shinobi are neat, but besides that they all just serve as distractions from the core Sonic gameplay, which is what I actually came to this Sonic game for. The Mania boss fights fall squarely into that category, and unfortunately they went the S3K route, so now every level has a boss of some kind.

Or the underwhelming final boss fight that's mostly style over substance and pales next to its predecessor. Or the Mean Bean machine reference that was cute the first time and an irritation every following playthrough. Like the Sky Chase callback no one asked for. Yes, a lot of the core gameplay is awesome and really understands Sonic, but at the same time its loaded with so many annoyances that are clearly the work of overzealous devs. You can tell this game was made by fans, in the best and worst ways. Mind you, some of them were great fun, like Metallic Madness Act 2 and Press Garden Act 2, but overall I am not pleased with Mania's bosses, and hope they are improved if Headcannon makes another 2D Sonic game, Does anyone else feel this way?īut the "thinking outside if the box/trying to be different" mentality is my core issue with Mania. You either finish it in 5 seconds, or you get janked into the pit. The first phase you just run and jump a little, the second phase is kind of uninteresing (much as I appreciate the Sonic Adventure and 8-bit Sonic 2 references) and while I like referencing Knuckles' Chaotix, the last phase is a pain. Metal Sonic's fight I also feel kind of sucks (#Sonic4DidItBetter). I also dislike how sometimes Eggman will not be bounced at all by you, despite him not flashing to represent Invicibility Frames.

While it's creative, and Super Sonic makes it your bitch, I feel it also goes on forever (after a pretty long stage, to boot). Finally, the boss reminds me of Advance 2, and I HATE that game.įlying Battery's second one also bothers me. Secondly, there is no way to be done with the fight quickly you have to do four cycles yes-or-yes. Jumping feels really gimped in this fight, and makes dodging the stupid red missiles a pain in the ass.

My least favorite has to be Studiopolis Act 1. Granted, the old games also had their stinkers (hello, Sandopolis Act 1) but overall I feel Mania's boss quality is fairly low. I feel like several of them either drag, or are incredibly annoying. Like, I feel I can count the bosses I actually enjoyed fighting in one hand. Some are basically entirely playable regardless, while others are nothing more than fascinating remnants buried deep within the game code.Įither way, the developers sure didn't want you to see these unused bosses. While I've been overall loving the game (finally got around to playing it), the bosses I feel are easily the weakest part.

Ideas are thrown out all the time, whether in the earlier drafting stages or perhaps even weeks prior to release.
